A day after the Congress suffered a stunning loss to the BJP in Haryana, Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday broke his silence on the party’s dismal performance in the state and said the grand old party was analysing what he called “unexpected” result in the state. He also flagged ‘irregularities’ in the counting of votes in some Assembly constituencies in Haryana.
Rahul Gandhi, in a tweet, posted a day after the declaration of results in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir, said the Congress would inform the Election Commission about complaints of discrepancies in the counting of votes in some Assembly constituencies in Haryana.
“We are analysing the unexpected result of Haryana. We will inform the Election Commission about the complaints coming from many Assembly constituencies. Heartfelt thanks to all the people of Haryana for their support and to our party workers for their tireless hard work. We will continue this fight for rights, for social and economic justice, for truth, and will keep raising your voice,” he said.
The BJP made a stunning turnaround in the Haryana Assembly polls, wiping off Congress’s initial gains, before ending up with 48 of 90 Assembly seats. This is the party’s best-ever haul since the state came into existence in 1966. The Congress ended up with 37 and failed to capitalise on the 10-year-old anti-incumbency against the BJP.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi reacted to the National Conference-Congress win in Jammu and Kashmir, saying the result is a victory of the Constitution.
“My heartfelt thanks to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. INDIA’s victory in Jammu and Kashmir is a victory of the Constitution, a victory of democratic self-respect,” he said.
The National Conference-Congress alliance won a majority with 48 seats in Jammu and Kashmir, while the BJP finished second with 29 seats, its best-ever performance in the Union Territory till date.
